Memorial Tribute for Marley Mehta Shah
Marley was a tenacious spirit and an emotionally intuitive soul. He kept his circle small and protected those within it fiercely. Being his companion taught me so much about dogs, but perhaps one of the greatest lessons was that an old dog can always learn new tricks. At eight years old, Marley completed an intensive eight-week board-and-train program because of his severe reactivity and aggression toward people. He wasn’t a dog who welcomed strangers into his space, and children were certainly not his favorite. He knew his boundaries, and he made them known. But Marley also had an incredible capacity to learn. Through dedicated training, patience, and perseverance, he learned to coexist with two toddlers. He tolerated their antics, their chaos, and all the little things that come with having babies around, but he wasn’t afraid to correct them when they crossed his boundaries. A few scratches and bite marks later, he was still my number one baby. He never set out to hurt anyone; he was protective of his space and, as he grew older, increasingly protective of me. He had his limits, and he made sure everyone knew them. But when my babies arrived, just twenty months apart, something in him seemed to shift. He became their little guardian, keeping watch over them and protecting them throughout the day, even from their own dad or anyone else who wasn’t me. I will never forget the way he licked them when they were infants, so tenderly, as if they were his own puppies. For a dog who had once struggled to accept people into his world, the way he came to accept and watch over my babies was something I will always cherish. I will remember his younger years, when he was fast and furious; his middle years, when he strived to be better and fearlessly took on every challenge presented to him; and his senior years, when he cherished the outdoor walks with his family, even when he could no longer keep up. Through every stage of his life, he remained a cuddle bug with an unmatched appetite and an unwavering drive to hunt. He never failed to lick away my tears when I was down, and he never hesitated to alert me when an unfamiliar person approached our home. I have a younger German Shepherd who is nearly three times his size, yet somehow, she was afraid of Marley. It didn’t take me long to realize that Marley was the actual German Shepherd, just stuck in a little body. His spirit was bigger than his stature could ever contain. He was stubborn, fiercely loyal, protective to his core, and capable of a tenderness that those who never knew him might never have imagined. He taught me that dogs are not defined by their hardest moments, that growth is possible even in their senior years, and that beneath a tough exterior can live a heart full of love. Marley was never just a little dog. He was a force of nature, and a piece of my heart that will never be replaced. And no matter how old he got, or how much the world around him changed, he would always be my number one baby. The house will feel quiet and empty without you. Thank you for choosing me to be your companion and student. It was an honor; i love you Marls.
